The stress summit was called for by HSE because of the growing problem that Stress, anxiety and depression has come, with £11.7 million working days lost in 2015/2016. The cost of this problem has escalated over the years to £5.2 billion a year, both HSE and the UK government have been attempting to tackle depression and stress over the years and the summit is one of the ways they are trying to reduce this figure.
The summit is hosted by the Health and Safety executive (HSE), the stress summit is designed to bring together a range of keynote speakers and industry leaders to show how an organisation or company can prevent well know stresses in the modern workplace. In this summit you will also learn how to implement the latest management standard which helps to prevent stress in the workplace.
Stress in the workplace
Not only is work related stress damaging to the health and wellbeing of employees and employers it can also heavy impact the productivity and profitability within a company due to the amount of hours employees are taking off because of this illness.
Managing staff that are suffering depression and stress can be as simple as the language in which you talk with them, the way to say things to an employee can motivate and increase productivity relatively quickly. Stress can hit anyone at any level of the business not just the lower level employees a recent study found that work related stress is widespread and is not confined to a particular sector or job role.
Management Standards for work related stress?
HSE describe the latest management standards as defining the characteristics or culture of an organisation where the risks from work related stress are being effectively managed and controlled. The standards cover six areas of work that is not managed correct can result in poor health and well-being, lower productivity and increased absence.
- Demands – This includes issues such as workload, work patterns and the work environments
- Control – How much say the person has in the way they do their work.
- Support – This includes the encouragement, sponsorship and resources provided by the organisation, line management and colleagues.
- Relationships – This includes promoting positive working to avoid conflict and dealing with unacceptable behaviour.
- Role – Whether people understand their role within the organisation and whether the organisation ensures that they do not have conflicting roles.
- Change – How organisational change (large or small) is managed and communicated in the organisation.
As an employer it is your duty to help ensure a stress free environment for your employees this will help increase productivity and decrease absent days due to stress related illnesses.
